Champions League QF: Real Madrid vs Tottenham Recap (2nd Leg)

1 – 0
Real Madrid vs Tottenham

It was very fast-paced match with both teams making quick counter attacks.  Tottenham actually had a lot of pretty close chances, giving Casillas quite a work out.  They even actually looked like the stronger team.  But in the end, what counts is not the “almost-made-it” shots or being the stronger team, what counts is who scored the most goals.

CRonaldo scoring the only goal of the match

The only goal in the match was from CRonaldo’s longe range shot which goalie Heurelho Gomes blocked but couldn’t hold on to the ball.  Real now advances to the semis with final aggregate score of 6-0.  And yes, CRonaldo’s teammates do celebrate with him after all.  Good to know.

is he trying to start a fad of the Jose Rizal hair?

On an unrelated note… What was up with CRonaldo’s hair??

Champions League QF: Real Madrid vs Tottenham Preview (2nd Leg)

Real Madrid vs Tottenham (2nd Leg)
April 14 @

With a 4-point goal advanatge, it would seem that Real Madrid will most likely be advancing to the semi-finals, a first in eight years.

There’s isn’t much to say about this match, as like the Barca vs Tottenham game, this also seems like a formality, unless of course Tottenham pulls off a miracle.  Real must be very comfortable with their lead that coach Jose Mourinho can afford to have two of his key players Sergio Ramos and Angel Di Maria miss the match to avoid picking up a 2nd yellow card (and subsequently miss the next match).

They are seriously on the path of trying to reclaim the Champions League title they have won 9 times.  But they will have to go thru Barca first.

Champions League QF: Real Madrid vs Tottenham Recap (1st Leg)

4 – 0
Real Madrid vs Tottenham

I got to be honest, I didn’t get to watch the games coz I overslept L  But looking at the scores, and the numbers, it obvious that Real Madrid just really dominated this match.  They had 14 attempts off target and 11 attempts on target and converting 4 into goals while Tottenham only had 3 attempts and had one of it on target.

Was the sending off of Peter Crouch only 15 minutes into the game a big factor to Tottenham’s loss?

And, darn it!  CRonaldo finally scored and I missed it...  Did his teammates celebrate with him?

This is what I get for oversleeping… Will try to update this entry once I get to see the replay.

Champions League Quarterfinals Sked

Finally, Balls Channel gave the schedule of the Quarterfinals 1st Leg matches.  J

Here you go:

Champions League QF: Real Madrid vs Tottenham (1st Leg)

Real Madrid vs Tottenham (1st Leg)
April 6 @

Good thing I didn’t post this right away… breaking news, C, CRonaldo, who has been in doubt to play in this match, can make it after all.  He, along with Kaka, Marcelo and, surprisingly, Higuain (who is coming off from a ling injury) will be playing in the 1st leg match against Tottenham.

Real Madrid seems to be the stronger team and they are playing in their home court.  But Tottenham, have been great with their away games.

Being the more favored team to win in the quarters, I hope the los blancos don’t get too cocky. And for some reason, I’m for the underdogs win and move on to the semis.

Stadium: Santiago Bernabéu (Real Madrid‘s home turf)

Champions League Quarterfinals Schedules

The Champions League Quarterfinals has been drawn and here are the teams who will face off each other to reach the semi-finals:

Real Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspurs
1st Leg: April 6 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM
2nd Leg: April 14 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM

Inter Milan vs Schalke
1st Leg: April 6 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM
2nd Leg: April 14 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM

Chelsea vs Manchester United
1st Leg: April 7 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM
2nd Leg: April 13 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM

Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk
1st Leg: April 7 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM
2nd Leg: April 13 @ 3:30AM or 5:30AM

Over-all, it seems like a good draw.  The "strong" (well, at least in my opinion) teams are not playing against each other yet.

The teams who have wished to avoid Barca in the quarterfinals can now breathe a sigh of releif... except for the Spurs, that is.  Everyone is assuming that Barca is a shoo-in for the semis, I do hope they live up to that expectation... you know what they say in football, anything can happen.

I want the defending champions, Inter Milan, to advance to the next stage and many think they got lucky in the draw when got the "weakest" team in the 8 that are left.  But at the same time, I'm kinda rooting for the underdog, hoping Schalke can still play against Real Madrid later on (and beat them).

Will keep you updated on the final timeslots of Balls Channel’s live coverage.

Champions League: Milan vs. Tottenham 2nd Leg Recap

0 – 0
Milan vs. Tottenham

A draw was just not enough for Milan to qualify then to the next round.  Another Italian team bites the dust.

There’s nothing really much I can say about this match as I didn’t really watch it, hehehe… Will try to catch the replay, though…

March 10 @ AC Milan vs. Tottenham (Replay)

With Roma bowing out of Champions League, Milan should pull in a win to show that all is well with Serie A teams who made it this far in the competition.  And with only a 1-point goal difference on aggregate to beat, Milan has a better chance than fellow Italian team, Roma.

Gattuso Headbutt

Trivia Time: Club Nicknames

Gunners, Rossoneri, La Blaugrana??? Wha???  If you’re new in following the Champions League or European Football in general, you’ve probably heard of these words before.  Other than their official club title, teams also have other names their fans (or critics) call them by.  Some names are pretty easy to figure out which team it’s referreing to (jersey colors) while some are a bit harder to guess.  So here’s a guide to the major football club nicknames in Europe:

AC Milan
  • Rossoneri (The Red and Blacks/Red Blacks): obviously, because of their jersey color
  • Il Diavolo (The Devil): because the club’s logo used to be an image of a red devil with a Golden Star for Sport Excellence located next to it.

Tottenham Hotspur
  • Spurs: This one is also obvious, spurs because it’s a shortcut of hotspur :P
  • Cockerels: because their logo is a fighting cockerel on a ball
  • Lilywhites: because of their jersey colors
  • Yids or Yiddos: this usually refers to the fans of the team, generally used by the rival Arsenal fans, it’s more derogatory in nature because of the large Jewish population (their language is Yiddish) in the Haringey/Stamford Hill area.

Valencia
  • Los Ches: Xe or Che is a widely used interjection that expresses protest, surprise or exasperation, which is one of the symbols of the Valencian identity, hence they are called the Xe Team or Los Ches.
  • Els Taronja (The Orange): from their jersey color when the play away games
  • Valencianistas: is pretty much self-explanatory
  • Los Pulos
  • Xotos

FC Schalke 04
  • Die Knappen (The Miners): because during its early years, many of its players and supporters are from the coal mine workers of Gelsenkirchen.
  • Die Königsblauen (The Royal Blues): because of the color of their jerseys

Arsenal: The Gunners or Gooners
What are stored in an arsenal? Yup, you got it—guns.  Therefore, The Gunners

FC Barcelona (the team name is sometimes shortened to Barca)
  • La Blaugrana (The Blue Scarlets): because of jersey colors, the fans are called Blaugranes
  • Los Culés or Culers (The bottoms): this is usually used to call the fans of Barca.  Culs means arse or a** in english, and the spectators/fans in the 1st stadium (Camp de la Indústria) sat with their culs over the stand

AS Roma:
  • Giallorossi (The Yellow and Reds/Yellow-Reds): these are the colors of their old jersey
  • I Lupi (The Wolves): from the wolves found in their logo/badge (female wolf with the two infant brothers)
  • La Maggica (The Magic One):

Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Gornyaki (The Miners):  When the club was formed, it was originally called Stakhanovets which means they are part of the Stakhanovite movement derived from Aleksei Stakhanov, a coal-miner in the Donets basin.
  • Kroty (The Moles):

Olympique Lyonnaise: they are sometimes simply called Lyon
  • Les Gones (The Boys or The Kids): can’t find anything about this, only that Gones is the regional dialect word for kids
  • OL: initials of the club’s name

Real Madrid:
  • Los Galácticos (The Galactics or superstars or from the “galaxy of the stars): this actually used to call the expensive and world-famous players the club signed.  This term was used during time of Florentino Pérez, then club president, who implemented this policy of signing or purchasing at least one galáctico or superstar player in the summer of every year (which started with Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo and Beckham).  Galactico can be used to refer to the transfer policy or the player bought under this policy.  The idea was to form a team of superstars to make them an unbeatable club (however, it kinda backfired as the galactics grew massive egos and stopped training.  Now most of the original galactics have left, so I dunno if you can still call them this. Barca seems to fit this description now)
  • Los Merengues (The Meringues): their jersey resembled the spanish food/dessert meringue
  • Los Blancos (The Whites) because of their jersey color

Kobenhavn:
  • Byens Hold (The City's Team): is this a literal description?
  • Løverne (The Lions): as a lion is in their logo

Chelsea:
  • The Pensioners: This was because of the war veterans, well-known pensioners, living in a nearby hospital
  • The Blues: because of their jersey color

Inter Milan:
  • Nerazzurri (The Black and Blues): jersey colors
  • La Beneamata (The Cherished One or well loved):
  • Il Biscione (The Big Grass Snake) or Il Serpente (The Serpent): the snake is an important symbol of Milan (seen in the coat of arms of the House of Sforza, ruler of Italy)
  • Baüscia (Boasters in Lombard language):

FC Bayern Munich:
  • Der FCB (The FCB): dunno if this has something to do with partnership of Paul Breitner and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the pitch, which was called FC Breitnigge (FCB), who led the team to Bundesliga titles in 1980 and 1981
  • Die Roten (The Reds): because of their jersey colors
  • FC Hollywood (Hollywood Football Club): there was a time in the 90s when Bayern's players were frequent tabloid fodders, always appearing in the gossip pages instead of the sports pages, so they earned the nickname FC Hollywood

Olympique Marseille: L'OM, meaning The OM
Is this based on the club’s initials? Hhhmmmm…

Manchester United: Red Devils
Apparently, they chose devils because they liked it, so they incorporated a devil into the club badge and... their jersey color is red.
